ABIGAIL
Iâm not in a good mood this morning. I really wanted to chat with Jo last night, but sheâd been vague and standoffish, like she couldnât wait to get off the phone. Noah had been out late, doing some research for his book, and thereâd been another screw-up at work I needed to fix first thing today. At this rate, Iâll be out of a job at the end of the week. Derek isnât a patient man and I think my boss is at breaking point with the constant costuming dramas. Considering he mentioned me being on my last chance when he first warned me, Iâm surprised Iâm still employed.
To make matters worse, Mandy or whoeverâs been vandalizing my place, has taken it one step further and Iâm so shaken I start hyperventilating. I forgot to check the mail when I got home last night, so a moment ago when I opened my mailbox and saw a giant scorpion curled up on an envelope, I freaked. Usually, I donât even look first, I just reach in and grab whateverâs there, but ever since the weird incidents around the house Iâm extra careful.
I back away from the box and slam into something, which makes me scream again.
âHey, are you okay?â Noahâs arms wrap around me from behind, strong and comforting, and I allow myself the luxury of sinking into his embrace before straightening and pointing to the mailbox.
âThereâs a scorpion in there.â
He spins me around to face him, his expression incredulous. âAre you sure?â
âDo I look like Iâd mistake a scorpion for a grasshopper?â
He takes my snark in his stride. âOkay, let me search online for a local pest controller and call them.â
âItâs not a spider or termite infestation, itâs a scorpion with a tail this big.â I hold my arms apart by several feet, finally getting my heart rate under control and managing a tight smile when he laughs. âAnd Iâve got another problem at work so I canât stick around to handle it.â
âGo. Leave it with me, Iâll take care of it.â
I could protest but whatâs the point? Hereâs a dependable guy taking care of a nasty problem for me. I should be thanking him rather than clinging to my independence like Iâve done since I had Rob. Cal may have been around for those first few years but heâd never been fully present, not in the way I needed him to be. Sure, he had said all the right things and done all the right things, but his heart hadnât been in it and I saw that every single day. It had almost been a relief when weâd officially called it quits, agreeing to remain friends while co-parenting Rob.
Our son hadnât known about our split. He accepted the fact his father had a job that took him away from us for long periods of time and whenever Cal returned, we resumed our family life, which stupidly included me welcoming him back into my bed. But the arrangement had suited us and I wouldâve done anything for Rob.
