TWENTY-EIGHT

ABIGAIL

I’m not in a good mood this morning. I really wanted to chat with Jo last night, but she’d been vague and standoffish, like she couldn’t wait to get off the phone. Noah had been out late, doing some research for his book, and there’d been another screw-up at work I needed to fix first thing today. At this rate, I’ll be out of a job at the end of the week. Derek isn’t a patient man and I think my boss is at breaking point with the constant costuming dramas. Considering he mentioned me being on my last chance when he first warned me, I’m surprised I’m still employed.

To make matters worse, Mandy or whoever’s been vandalizing my place, has taken it one step further and I’m so shaken I start hyperventilating. I forgot to check the mail when I got home last night, so a moment ago when I opened my mailbox and saw a giant scorpion curled up on an envelope, I freaked. Usually, I don’t even look first, I just reach in and grab whatever’s there, but ever since the weird incidents around the house I’m extra careful.

I back away from the box and slam into something, which makes me scream again.

“Hey, are you okay?” Noah’s arms wrap around me from behind, strong and comforting, and I allow myself the luxury of sinking into his embrace before straightening and pointing to the mailbox.

“There’s a scorpion in there.”

He spins me around to face him, his expression incredulous. “Are you sure?”

“Do I look like I’d mistake a scorpion for a grasshopper?”

He takes my snark in his stride. “Okay, let me search online for a local pest controller and call them.”

“It’s not a spider or termite infestation, it’s a scorpion with a tail this big.” I hold my arms apart by several feet, finally getting my heart rate under control and managing a tight smile when he laughs. “And I’ve got another problem at work so I can’t stick around to handle it.”

“Go. Leave it with me, I’ll take care of it.”

I could protest but what’s the point? Here’s a dependable guy taking care of a nasty problem for me. I should be thanking him rather than clinging to my independence like I’ve done since I had Rob. Cal may have been around for those first few years but he’d never been fully present, not in the way I needed him to be. Sure, he had said all the right things and done all the right things, but his heart hadn’t been in it and I saw that every single day. It had almost been a relief when we’d officially called it quits, agreeing to remain friends while co-parenting Rob.

Our son hadn’t known about our split. He accepted the fact his father had a job that took him away from us for long periods of time and whenever Cal returned, we resumed our family life, which stupidly included me welcoming him back into my bed. But the arrangement had suited us and I would’ve done anything for Rob.
